In a picturesque setting at the meticulously renovated Hyatt Regency Pravets resort, automotive fans and connoisseurs gathered to revel in the splendour of classic cars during this year’s annual Drustar Concours d` Elegance. This prestigious event transported attendees back in time, offering a glimpse into the rich history and elegance of vintage automobiles.
Stealing the spotlight was the iconic 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W195), which clinched the highly coveted Best of Show award. Valued at approximately 3 million dollars, this magnificent Benz rightfully claimed its place as the jewel of the event. Yet, it faced formidable competition from the equally legendary 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400S, securing the esteemed Best Iconic Car Award. Together, these two automotive titans boasted a jaw-dropping combined worth of 7 million dollars, underscoring the sheer excellence on display.
Adding to the allure of the event was a captivating Porsche exhibition, sponsored by the marque itself. The exhibition thoughtfully juxtaposed the timeless 1964 model 356C with the cutting-edge electric Taycan, serving as a poignant symbol of the automotive world’s evolution. Of note, organizers introduced an award for the finest Porsche, which was triumphantly claimed by the 1985 911 G Targa.
In a delightful twist, the top honours in the Eastern European category were awarded to a meticulously preserved Bulgarrenault 10. This rare gem not only boasted pristine condition but also harboured original tools, spare parts, and even a magazine from its era, offering a tantalizing glimpse into yesteryears.
The intriguing Bulgarrenault narrative harks back to the mid-20th century when Bulgaria harboured ambitious plans in the realm of automobile manufacturing. In 1966, a historic collaboration with the esteemed French automaker Renault gave birth to the Bulgarrenault brand. Among its standout models, the Bulgarrenault 10, a variant of the Renault 10, was lauded for its advanced features, making it a symbol of mobility for countless Bulgarian families.
The 1951 Mercedes 170 S Cabriolet A (W136) was bestowed with the prestigious FIVA award for being the best-preserved car. Not to be overshadowed, pre-war classics earned their accolades, with recognition bestowed upon the 1939 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 75 and the 1936 BMW Sport Cabriolet. Among post-war vehicles, the Packard Custom Super Clipper (1947) and the Mercedes 170 S Cabriolet A (W136) dazzled the audience.
The selection process for the “Drustar Concours d’Elegance” is nothing short of meticulous, with individual invitations extended to participants. The discerning jury, comprised of Europe’s foremost historic automobile experts, ensures a formidable level of competition, drawing collectors, media, and enthusiasts alike. This year introduced a delightful addition – a children’s jury, accompanied by an auction featuring children’s drawings on the theme of historic vehicles.
The grand finale of the event unfolded during a spectacular “Grease”-themed evening, infusing a delightful touch of nostalgia and entertainment into an already remarkable gathering.
With representatives from FIVA, including JJ Dolemann as the FIVA Steward and Nataša G. Jerina as the FIVA Vice President (Culture and Youth), in attendance, the Drustar Concours d’ Elegance reaffirmed its status as a premier event, paying homage to the enduring beauty and allure of classic automobiles.
